World of the Celts - Simon James
This is a richly illustrated book, great for your coffee table. The Celt jewelry is just exquisite, their craftsmanship sublime and sensitive. The Celt culture was advanced too: they were the first people to have a democratic, deistic society granting equal rights to women and having a comprehensive system of equal justice for all.
The Yale Shakespeare - William Shakespeare
Many of these plays were based upon ancient lore of the Celts, told over the ages from memory (the Druids traditionally never put anything down in writing) by the story telling bards. Shakespeare's genius was to embellish the stories with some of the most lofty language ever to grace the earth. The plays may seem heavy reading - until you see one or two of them as a movie (I recommend Julius Caesar or Much Ado About Nothing). The prose was meant for speaking in a theatrical context, but it's worthwhile to cherish it one phrase at a time in the written word.
Anam Cara - John O'Donohue
"A Book of Celtic Wisdom" it says on the cover, written by a Catholic Scholar it says on the back. Oh-oh, I says. It's a charming little volume of profound Celtic wisdom, but with many of the earthy, natural allusions to trees, animals, brooks, and mountains alliterated into more ethereal concepts like spirit and faith. What's wrong with appreciating nature for what it truly is - beautiful, sublime, and spiritual?
The Celtic Book of Days - Caitlin Matthews
As beautiful as anything that'll ever grace your coffee table, this slim volume is richly illustrated with exquisite finesse. Only a genius could manage to package the mystique of Celtic place-names with such lovely snippets of timely wisdom. Not only that, but to spread it all out into a calendar - I've not since had a gray day!
Merlin - R. J. Stewart
A Penguin Classic paperback, with two complete books about Merlin. The Prophetic Vision is a formal study of Merlin's prophecies, which may not be as dramatic as those of Nostradamus; but were just as accurate, if not more so. The Mystic Life delves into the spirituality of Merlin; i.e. of the Druids and the Celtic culture. It was a chivalric time and ideals were high.
