Why is energy conservation an X File? Because the Freon Ban has cost $1 trillion in new air conditioning equipment, and the new "ozone save" freons aren't working ~ the ozone hole is bigger now than ever. Moreover, the new freons are 25% less efficient, so the whole world is burning up at least 25% more energy - that's enough to have caused the California energy bust a few years ago; the collapse of Enron; the great Northeast blackout of 2003; the doubling in gas prices at the pump; and the current $65/barrel oil prices.

The worse part is that new freons are being phased in at this very moment. They are even less efficient. They are even less efficatious in helping the ozone layer. They are driving the world even closer to the brink of a global depression. Washington supports this 110% because Congress is ruled by special interests. For example, which is more of an eXtreme technology - fuel cells (which the head of NISSAN recently said were fifty years from being competitive) or energy conservation, which is a four letter word in Washington?

This website linked above is an abridged edition of my textbook from McGraw-Hill,
Retrofitting for Energy Conservation. There is one section with over 200 simple energy saving tips you can use at home or at work. These came mostly from various newspaper columns and radio spots I did a few years ago. Personally, I think that every time anybody does one of these things its a Good Deed or Mitzvot, and gets you credit points for going to Heaven. The Jews consider "Repairing the Earth" a Mitzvot; Christians too...

There's a simple spreadsheet on the website you can download FREE. It has a world wide database and so anybody anywhere can use it to reduce their annual energy use by 35% or more. Three or four of the most effective projects are built in, so with a couple of hours of effort you can have the hard numbers that can justify some projects. With eXtreme technology like that available, what limited fossil fuels we have might just last until we can come up with a better energy source.
